Decorating with plants

Just as interior designers rely upon layers of different textures, patterns and tones to develop successful rooms, we believe layering is an important tool in garden design. This image illustrates the depth that can be achieved within a limited space by successive planting layers in the foreground before the distant landscape is borrowed.

A brick pathway has been edged with lawn before Spring bulbs were planted in rows with a range of flowers continuing from February to May.  Only then do you find the ancient pear and apple espalier, which were planted only one month before this picture was taken.
